Carlos A. Muñoz-Viveros, DDS, MSD
Dr.
Muñoz-Viverosis a graduate of Universidad Nacional Pedro Henriquez
Ureña in the Dominican Republic, where he received his DDS degree in
1978. During 1980 to 1981, he received an American DDS and a master’s
degree in Prosthodontics from Indiana University. Currently, he is
Professor and Chair of the Department of Restorative Dentistry at The
State University of New York at Buffalo.
Dr. Muñoz is a member of the American College of Prosthodontics, the
International Association of Dental Research, the Hispanic Dental
Association, the Academy of Dental Materials and a Fellow of the
American College of Dentists.
He has presented lectures in Central and South America, the United
States, Asia and in Europe. He has authored over 50 scientific articles,
contributed to clinical textbooks, and serves on the editorial board of
the Journal of Contemporary Dental Practice. His research focus
is in dental adhesives, composite restorations and ceramic materials.
Edward J. Swift, Jr., DMD, MSD
Dr.
Swift received his DMD degree from the Medical University of South
Carolina and a master’s degree in Operative Dentistry from the
University of Iowa. Dr. Swift practiced general dentistry for several
years, and he has taught at the University of Mississippi and the
University of Iowa. He is currently Professor and Chairman of the
Department of Operative Dentistry at the University of North Carolina
School of Dentistry, Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Dr. Swift is actively
involved in dental materials research, particularly in the area of
dentin bonding and other aspects of adhesive and esthetic dentistry. He
also maintains a part-time intramural practice devoted to restorative
and esthetic dentistry.
Dr. Swift is a member of various professional organizations including
the American Dental Association, the Academy of Operative Dentistry, and
the International Association for Dental Research. He is a fellow of the
American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry and the Academy of Dental
Materials. He is also a member of the Dentsply Corporate Education
Advisory Board.
Dr. Swift serves on the editorial boards of Operative Dentistry,
American Journal of Dentistry, Practical Procedures and
Aesthetic Dentistry, and The Dental Advisor and is the
associate editor for the Journal of Esthetic and Restorative
Dentistry. He reviews manuscripts for other journals such as Journal
of the American Dental Association,Journal of Dental Research,
and Dental Materials.
Dr. Swift has published over 175 journal articles and has written ten
textbook chapters. He has also presented many scientific papers and
continuing education courses regionally, nationally, and
internationally, and has been recognized as a “Leader in Continuing
Education” by Dentistry Today.
Authors
Calogero Dolce, DDS, PhD
Dr.
Dolce is an Associate Professor in the Department of Orthodontics at the
University of Florida. Dr. Dolce completed his DDS and PhD at SUNY-Buffalo
and a certificate in orthodontics at the University of Florida.
He is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. Currently, Dr. Dolce is a co-investigator on NIDCR-funded research that
examines the timing of treatment for Class II malocclusion. In addition,
he is involved in a clinical trial funded by Align Technologies and BAS
medical. His other research interest is on the biology of tooth
movement.
Dr. Dolce serves as a reviewer for various journals including the
Journal of Dental Research and the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. Dr. Dolce is involved in teaching orthodontic
residents and is part of Faculty practice.
Robert W. Gerlach, DDS, MPH
Dr.
Gerlach is Principal Scientist in Worldwide Clinical Investigations at
The Procter & Gamble Company, Cincinnati, Ohio USA. In that role,
Dr. Gerlach is responsible for studies evaluating the safety and
efficacy of oral care products worldwide. His clinical trials research
includes initiatives in the areas of caries prevention, periodontal
therapy, and more recently, esthetic dentistry, especially tooth
whitening.
With over 100 studies, Dr. Gerlach is recognized as a leading clinical
researcher in the area of whitening. His research has led to novel
delivery systems for vital bleaching, and new dentifrice formulations
for stain control.
Dr. Gerlach is a public health dentist who received a dental degree from
the University of Michigan and a public health degree from the
University of South Florida. His work experience includes various
government and academic appointments, as well as extensive private
practice experience. Dr. Gerlach’s research is reported in over 100
manuscripts and published abstracts.
Charles J. Goodacre, DDS, MSD
Dr.
Goodacre received his DDS degree from Loma Linda University School of
Dentistry in 1971. He completed a three-year combined program in
Prosthodontics and Dental Materials at Indiana University School of
Dentistry and in 1974, earned his MSD degree. He began full- time
teaching at Indiana University School of Dentistry in 1974 and has three
times received awards from senior dental classes as the outstanding
clinical instructor or outstanding lecturer. He served as Chairman of
the Department of Prosthodontics at Indiana University, and currently is
Dean of the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry.
Dr. Goodacre is a diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics,
past-president of the American Board of Prosthodontics, a fellow of the
Academy of Prosthodontists, fellow of the American College of
Prosthodontists, and holds membership in the American Academy of Fixed
Prosthodontics.
He has co-authored the 4th edition of Johnston’s Modern Practice
in Fixed Prosthodontics, has written textbook chapters for
pediatric dentistry and endodontics, and served as an editor of the International
Journal of Prosthodontics for 10 years.
Gerry Kugel, DMD, MS, PhD
Dr.
Kugel received his B.S. from Rutgers University in Biology and
Psychology and his doctorate in dentistry from Tufts University School
of Dental Medicine. Dr. Kugel also received his M.S. from Tufts in the
Department of Anatomy and Cellular Biology at the Sackler School of
Graduate Biomedical Sciences and his PhD in Dental Materials from the
University of Siena, Italy. Dr. Kugel has published over 100 articles
and 150 abstracts in the field of restorative materials and techniques.
Dr Kugel is on the editorial board of five dental journals and is
Professor and Associate Dean for Research at a major dental school.
W. Patrick Naylor, DDS, MPH, MS
Dr.
Naylor is an adjunct professor in the Department of Dental Educational
Services at the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry. After
obtaining his dental degree from the Georgetown University School of
Dentistry, he received a certificate in prosthodontics from the Harvard
School of Dental Medicine, a Master of Public Health degree from the
Harvard School of Public Health, and a Master of Science degree in
dental materials from Indiana University.
He is a member of the American Dental Association, the American College
of Prosthodontists, The International Association for Dental
Research/American Association for Dental Research, Omicron Kappa
Upsilon, and the John F. Johnston Society.
Dr. Naylor has published numerous abstracts and articles and written or
revised chapters in textbooks including, Skinner’s Science of
Dental Materials (Phillips, 9th edition) and authored his own
textbook, Introduction to Metal Ceramic Technology
(Quintessence Publishing Co.). He presently serves as a reviewer for The
Journal of Contemporary Dental Practice, and has served in the same
capacity for several prosthodontic journals.
Paul Sagel, BSChE
Mr.
Sagel is a Principal Engineer at the Procter & Gamble Company Health
Care Research Center in Cincinnati, Ohio USA. He graduated Suma Cum
Laude in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati and
earned the Herman Schneider Medal for his academic and professional
accomplishments. During his time at the University of Cincinnati, Mr.
Sagel also worked for the Drackett Company, where he received a
Presidents award for breakthrough developments in household cleaning
products.
Mr. Sagel joined P&G in 1993, where his initial years were spent
developing chewing gum technology, chemical technology for dentifrice,
packaging and clinical imaging methods. In 1996, he began working on
tooth whitening and invented Crest Whitestrips in early 1997. Mr. Sagel
was awarded the John G. Smale Innovation Award in 2000 for his
accomplishments and has been featured in leading publications and texts
as a breakthrough product innovator.
In 2002, Mr. Sagel was listed in Who's Who in the World, Who's Who
in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in Medicine and Health
Care – publications that recognize individuals internationally
for outstanding accomplishments. Mr. Sagel currently holds 18 patents
with others pending.
Shradha Sharma, DDS
Dr.
Shradha Sharma received her dental degree from D.Y Patil Dental College
and Hospital in Mumbai, India in April 1998. She also did her Fellowship
in esthetic dentistry at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine.
Currently she is working as an Assistant Professor in Research Administration on several research
studies as a co-investigator. She also works as an Operative Instructor
in the Prosthodontics and Operative Department at a major dental school.

Roger P. Levin, DDS
Dr.
Levin is founder and Chief Executive Officer of Levin Group, the leading
practice management consulting firm in dentistry. Consulting to more
than 8,500 practices since 1985, Levin Group and Dr. Levin were recently
named the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award winner in the
Consulting Services category. Dr. Levin has published more than 2,700
articles and 49 books. He currently serves as the Practice Management
Editor of six leading dental journals as well as a columnist for the Journal
of the American Dental Association.
Carmine Morreale, DMD
Dr.
Morreale has 20 years of clinical experience with an emphasis in the
field of Cosmetic Dentistry. Since graduating from Tufts University
School of Dental Medicine, he has held faculty appointments at both
Tufts and Harvard Universities. Dr. Morreale is presently a Clinical
Professor at the Boston University Goldman School of Dentistry. He is a
Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry.
