Fixodent® Questions and Answers

Does Fixodent contain zinc?

  • A small amount of zinc is used in all Fixodent denture adhesives to provide denture-hold. This helps the denture stay in place securely so your patients can eat, chew, talk, etc. more confidently.
    • Zinc is a common ingredient in many over-the-counter products, including cold remedies, sunscreen, deodorant, diaper rash cream, calamine lotion, and daily vitamin supplements.
    • It is also found in a variety of foods, such as beef, seafood, poultry, beans, nuts, seeds and whole grains.
    • Proteins, cells and hormones in the human body also contain zinc.

Does Fixodent cream/powder contain harmful levels of zinc?

  • No, Fixodent contains ingredients that are generally recognized as safe in the amounts used. We perform extensive scientific and safety testing on our products and their ingredients before they are marketed, and continue to monitor them for safety once in market. The amount of zinc an average denture adhesive user would ingest from daily usage of Fixodent is:
    • Less than the amount of zinc in most daily multi-vitamins
    • Less than 6 oysters (fried or raw)
    • Comparable to 6 oz. ground beef

Have you received calls from consumers regarding this issue?

  • We aren’t aware of any case where denture cream has been definitively linked to a health affect from zinc. We’ve received calls from consumers inquiring about plaintiff’s lawyers advertising alluding to a very broad range of vague symptoms. We perform extensive scientific and safety testing on our products and their ingredients before they are marketed, and continue to monitor them for safety once in market.

Is the zinc in Fixodent absorbed through the gingiva?

  • Fixodent undergoes extensive scientific evaluations and safety testing before appearing on shelf for consumer usage and we are unaware of any excessive zinc absorption through the gums.

Do other health care products and foods contain zinc?

  • Yes, zinc is in many OTC health care products and foods at safe levels.

How much Fixodent cream should my patients use?

  • Apply Fixodent adhesive cream to dentures in small strips or a series of dots, making sure not to apply it too close to the edges.
  • Press dentures firmly in place and hold briefly.
  • Many denture wearers find one use a day is sufficient. If patients are using Fixodent more than twice a day or have problems with denture hold, we suggest they consult with their dentist about the fit of their dentures.

Why don’t we have exact usage instructions?

  • Different users require different amounts. We recommend that patients begin with strips or a series of small dots. Patients should make sure not to apply it too close to the denture edges. If oozing occurs, a smaller amount of adhesive should be used. This may be an indication of poorly fitting dentures, and we recommend patients see their dentist.

Why do you leave ingredients off of the packaging?

  • Fixodent contains ingredients that are generally recognized as safe in the amounts used. We perform extensive scientific and safety testing on our products and their ingredients before they are marketed, and continue to monitor them for safety once in market. Providing safe products for consumer usage is Fixodent’s number one priority. All Fixodent products are manufactured, packaged and labeled in accord with FDA manufacturing practices.
